Interim WBC Junior Middleweight champion Vergil Ortiz scored a second-round stoppage of Erickson Lubin on November 8 in Texas. Immediately after the fight, Ortiz explained how he managed to secure such a quick finish and addressed those who expected him to lose.
“We gathered as much information about his mistakes as we could. And I took advantage of it. I just tried to box. I love fighting – that’s why I’m in boxing.
I felt like I could do it. I needed to believe in myself – and I believed. You know, there were so many people saying he would outbox me, knock me out. He’s a good fighter, but this is different levels,” Ortiz said.
After the fight, Jaron Ennis entered the ring and the two fighters agreed verbally to face each other. Ennis stated he would “make Ortiz pay” for the words coming from his team.
