Opetaia Dominates Massey: How It Went Down and Fight Statistics

On October 12 in Riyadh, Saudi Arabia, Australian IBF heavyweight champion Jai Opetaia (26-0, 20 KOs) defended his title against British fighter Jack Massey (22-3, 12 KOs).

Opetaia won a unanimous decision over Mairis Briedis in May, reclaiming the IBF title, while Massey celebrated a unanimous decision victory over Isaac Chamberlain in June.

The fight ended in the 7th round when Massey’s team threw in the towel during an Opetaia attack—TKO in the 6th.

The British boxer suffered his second defeat in his last four fights.

Fight Statistics:

Opetaia landed 87 punches out of 205 thrown (42.4%). Massey’s accuracy was nearly half that, with 41 punches landed out of 143 thrown (28.7%).

Jay completely outperformed his opponent in jabs: landing 11 out of 25 (44%). Jack managed only 5 jabs out of 31 thrown (16.1%).

In power punches, Massey fared slightly better, landing 36 out of 112 (32.1%), compared to Opetaia’s 76 out of 180 (42.2%).

It’s worth noting Jay's body work—he landed 36 body shots, all of which were power punches. Massey landed only 11 body shots, also all power.
