Ukraine's Oleksandr Usyk (21-0, 14 KOs), the world champion in the super heavyweight division with WBA, WBO, IBF, IBO, and The Ring titles, shared his thoughts on whether he's considering retirement.
"Every day, thoughts about my future, boxing, life, and significant fights cross my mind. One evening, as I lay down to sleep after a prayer, I pondered, 'Why am I thinking about all of this?'
Prolonged contemplation or waiting for something doesn't serve a purpose. It's essential to focus on the tasks at hand and not fixate on something that may lie ahead.
Nevertheless, daily, I reflect on boxing, a career that is still in its prime. I maintain the enthusiasm; I yearn to train and participate in the sport. But let's be pragmatic; I think my tenure in the elite sports world is drawing to a close.
I make this assertion for my benefit because I'm approaching the juncture where I must contemplate alternative pursuits after my professional career," expressed Usyk in an interview with the USYK17 YouTube channel.
In January 2024, Oleksandr Usyk will turn 37. His next fight is expected to be against Tyson Fury. While they have inked a contract, the precise date is yet to be confirmed.
