Former light heavyweight world champion Oleksandr Gvozdyk (20-2, 16 KOs) has shared details about his next bout — though there’s a twist.
— Oleksandr, what can you tell us about your upcoming fight? What’s known about the event you'll be boxing on?
“The fight is set for April 19 as part of a Golden Boy Promotions card. But the opponent I was supposed to face — Shawn McCalman — won’t be able to fight. Why? I honestly don’t know the reason. Right now, we’re searching for a replacement.”
— What about the main event?
“The headliner is a women's bout, featuring Fundora, the undisputed world champion. But to be honest, I don’t really follow women’s boxing.”
— So this fight could fall through as well?
“Anything can happen, really. I mean, I could die in my sleep tonight (laughs). So we’ll see. The fight’s fallen through twice already. I just hope this time it's different.”
— How important is it for you to fight soon?
“Very important! I just want to finally finish this. It’s frustrating — you train for two months, cut weight, starve, suffer — and then it all falls apart in an instant. When you prepare like that, you want to follow through, even if the purse isn’t big.”
Oleksandr Gvozdyk last fought in June 2024, when he dropped a unanimous decision to David Benavidez.
