The new WBC bridgerweight champion (up to 101.6 kg), Lawrence Okolie (20-1, 15 KOs), says he is ready to face the undisputed heavyweight champion (over 90.7 kg) Oleksandr Usyk (22-0, 14 KOs), even within his own weight category.
- Regarding Wilder, you've mentioned his name several times. Does it matter where the fight could take place, in bridgerweight or heavyweight?
- Not particularly, but obviously, when there's a chance to win a world title, I think it's always better when there's a belt on the line. He was the WBC heavyweight champion, so he would probably want to fight for the WBC belt.
I think, why not? It also depends on weight. A fighter like Zhang would never reach bridgerweight, but a fighter like Wilder has the weight for it. Just like Usyk, if he decides he wants to become a world champion in three categories. I don't know how many belts there are in bridgerweight, but there's a possibility for that too.
- Do you want it to be Usyk?
- Yes. I just feel that everyone else in Britain had their chance. I want to step up and test myself. For other people, it might seem crazy, but I look at him and think he’s sensational, very talented, but I have qualities he hasn’t faced in a long time, including speed and the like.
So I'd be happy if he wants to cement his legacy by becoming a world champion in three weight categories. I'm currently a world champion in two divisions. If he wants to become a champion in three weight categories, then let's do it, – said Okolie.
