Nicholas Walters Explains Why He Lost to Lomachenko

Former Jamaican world champion, 38-year-old Nicholas Walters (28-1-1, 22 KOs), in an interview with BoxingScene, recalled his bout against the former three-weight world champion Vasyl Lomachenko, explaining why he lost in that matchup.

"The fact is, I knew that my preparation for the fight with Lomachenko didn't go very well. We were more focused on making weight. Considering we hadn't fought for a year and a half, almost two years, there was a lot of weight to shed. Everyone was focused on the weight, not on sparring and defense. You all saw what happened, but I lived through it.

The only reason I left boxing was that I needed time with my family, time for myself. It was nice to be with the family 24/7. Boxing is a solitary, individual sport. It takes you away from your family, and you have to migrate to other places where you are constantly away from family.

I was always okay when I wasn't boxing because I was with my wife and kids. But that's all in the past, and we're looking forward to coming back," Walters shared.

In 2016, Nicholas lost to Lomachenko by retiring from the fight after seven rounds. That defeat was his first and, so far, only loss in his career. Afterward, he announced his retirement.

In 2023, the Jamaican made his return to boxing. Since then, Walters has defeated two opponents – by a decision in an 8-round match and by technical knockout in the 2nd round. His next opponent will be Joseph Adorno. They are scheduled for a 10-round match on March 27.
