Mungia Cleared in Doping Case: Result Deemed False

Mexican Super Middleweight boxer Jaime Mungia announced that the doping test, which showed a positive result after his fight against Bruno Surace, was a false positive.

“Over the past few months, I have been as transparent as possible while we worked to determine what led to the results of my doping test on May 4. From day one, I have clearly stated: I did not take and would never intentionally take banned substances. I have built my career on fair competition, respect for the sport, and integrity both in and out of the ring.

I want to thank the WBC for reviewing all the scientific evidence and confirming that there will be no investigation, charges, or sanctions. We received communication from the British Boxing Board of Control (BBBofC) that they appointed the UK Anti-Doping Agency (UKAD) as the body responsible for anti-doping regulation, testing, investigation, and results management, and after reviewing all materials, they reached the same conclusion.

Independent analysis — specifically the testing of my supplements at the WADA-accredited SMRTL laboratory, which also analyzed my A and B samples, as well as additional hair and nail tests conducted by world-renowned toxicologist Dr. Pascal Kintz — proved that the positive result was a false positive and occurred due to accidental contamination with pregnenolone, a legal, non-banned substance. The detected level was extremely low, provided no performance advantage, and was entirely consistent with incidental exposure.

I didn’t cheat — science proves it, and I’m grateful to the WBC, BBBofC, and UKAD for recognizing this truth.

Out of respect for the process, my team and I refrained from public statements, and now that the matter is fully resolved, I’m ready to put it behind me and move forward in my career. I look forward to returning to the ring and sincerely appreciate everyone — especially my family, team, fans, and sponsors — who stood by me during this ordeal,” said Mungia.

ESPN insider Salvador Rodriguez also reported that Mungia could return to the ring in November or December.

As a reminder, after the rematch against Bruno Surace, which took place on May 3, Jaime Mungia (45-2, 35 KOs) tested positive for a banned substance. The B sample soon confirmed the positive result. The fight ended with Mungia winning by unanimous decision.
