British heavyweight prospect Moses Itauma has shared his thoughts on a potential fight against unified WBA, WBC, IBF and IBO heavyweight champion Oleksandr Usyk.
– What went through your mind when Turki posted a tweet saying he wants to see your fight against Usyk?
– If the fight happens, it happens. If it doesn’t, it doesn’t. You know what I mean? I believe he’s capable of making it, but I don’t see any reason why Usyk would take the fight. So I haven’t really thought about it. It’s nice to hear, but will the fight actually happen? That’s a different question.
– People have talked a lot about it and asked whether it’s the right fight for Moses, whether it’s the right fight for Usyk. We would be interested to see what happens. But you have your own path, and if it crosses with Usyk’s, then that’s how it will be. It doesn’t necessarily have to be as soon as possible.
– Of course. But Usyk is getting older — he’s 38. He has to act decisively, but he has already knocked out many fighters. So just leave him alone.
On 24 January, Moses Itauma (13-0, 11 KOs) will face Jermaine Franklin. The most likely next opponent for Oleksandr Usyk (24-0, 15 KOs) is former champion Deontay Wilder, with their fight potentially taking place in late spring or early summer.
