British heavyweight prospect Moses Itauma has responded to frequent comparisons between himself and a young Mike Tyson. In an exclusive interview with Ready To Fight, Itauma explained why he’s not a fan of such talk.
— Do you like the comparisons to a young Mike Tyson?
— Personally, no.
— No?
— No, only because I’m on my own path and I want to build my own career.
You know, there was a Nigerian fighter… I can never pronounce his name. Ike.
— Ike Ibeabuchi.
— Ike Ibeabuchi. His whole career was based around being the next Mike Tyson, or the African Mike Tyson.
It was like people didn’t really appreciate who he actually was — and he was a monster.
If one is a young Mike Tyson, another is the African Mike Tyson, that makes Mike Tyson the original, and everyone else just a copy. I don’t want to be that. I don’t want to be a copy of Mike Tyson or George Foreman.
Obviously, I don’t blame anyone for thinking like that, because comparisons will always be made. But I want to make my own career and carve my own path."
In his last outing, Itauma scored a first-round knockout over Dempsey McKean on December 21 in Saudi Arabia, on the undercard of the Usyk vs. Fury rematch. Moses previously talked about when he plans to return to the ring.
The full interview will be available soon on the Ready To Fight YouTube channel.
