Veteran cutwoman Sammy Morris believes that the cut under the right eye of WBC heavyweight champion Tyson Fury (34-0-1, 24 KOs) will haunt him for the rest of his career.
"If he got the cut five years ago against Otto Wallin and it reopened five years later in the same place, then it hasn’t healed properly, and now there’s a double cut in that spot. Even coming back after 100 days, which is the general recommendation for when you should fight again after healing, he risks it reopening during the fight against Usyk.
Is this a career-long problem for Tyson Fury? Yes. You might think that after five years the cut wouldn’t reopen, but it did. As you age, your skin loses elasticity and collagen beneath it, making it much easier to get cuts. Fury is now 35 years old, and it will take him almost twice as long to recover than a 20-year-old. So, it will pose problems, and personally, I think it will reopen in the next fight.
As a fighter, he will be very aware of this. I hope he doesn't panic too much about it and will protect his eye, because the first thing Usyk will want to do is come out and hit that eye... Fury usually keeps his hands low and is quite showy. I don’t think we’ll see any of that. I think he’ll have very tight defense because he needs to constantly protect the eye," said Morris.
Tyson Fury's next fight is scheduled for May 18 in Riyadh, Saudi Arabia, against WBA, WBO, IBF, and IBO titleholder Oleksandr Usyk (21-0, 14 KOs) for the undisputed world heavyweight championship.
