Former undisputed heavyweight champion Mike Tyson explained why he continues to step into the ring at the age of 59. Tyson fought an exhibition against Roy Jones Jr. in 2020, had an official bout with Jake Paul in 2025, and is scheduled to face Floyd Mayweather in an exhibition in 2026.
“I have a 14-year-old son, and he asked me: ‘Why? Why are you doing this?’ For a moment, I didn’t know what to say. For a moment, it made me sad.
I said: ‘Because I’m the best to ever do it. That’s why.’
He didn’t understand, so I added: ‘I have to do it. This is all I know.’
Listen, I’ve made more money in my 50s than in my 20s. And in my 50s, I think I’ve only had about four fights. It’s really interesting. Money doesn’t mean anything. I can take care of the people I love,” Tyson said.
The showdown with Mayweather is planned for spring 2026.
