Julio Cesar Chavez Jr. was in a mental hospital for treatment.

As reported by TMZ Sports, former world champion Julio Cesar Chavez Jr. recently received treatment in a mental hospital.

This supposedly happened after his wife informed police that he had taken dozens of potent and potentially dangerous pills, and was concerned for his safety.

Chavez was not released home after officials determined that he needed treatment in a mental hospital in California. The law allows certain officials (police, doctors, etc.) to detain a person for up to 72 hours "for assessment and crisis intervention" if they believe that someone "poses a danger to others, themselves, or is incapacitated."

His father, Julio Cesar Chavez Sr., recently expressed concern about his son's condition:

"I feel sorry for him because he has young children, and he doesn't enjoy being with them sometimes. It pains me that he might go crazy, that he might have an accident, driving at full speed at night, that he might have a heart attack from all these pills he's taking," said Chavez Sr.

Chavez Jr. has not been boxing since 2021. He first lost to Anderson Silva by a unanimous decision, and then he defeated David Zegarra by a unanimous decision.
