Julio Cesar Chavez Jr. Released From Custody, Awaits Trial

Former world middleweight champion Julio Cesar Chavez Jr. has been released from prison in Mexico, where he was held after being deported from the United States in August.

According to ESPN, the 39-year-old boxer is accused of cartel ties and illegal weapons transportation. He is now awaiting trial.

The judge ruled that Chavez Jr. can remain free until the process begins, but he is forbidden from leaving Mexico. A three-month period has been set for further investigation.

The boxer’s lawyer, Ruben Fernando Benitez Alvarez, called the charges “speculation” and “urban legends.”

In July, Julio Cesar Chavez Jr. (54-7-1, 34 KOs) was detained in the U.S. following his fight against Jake Paul in Los Angeles, where he lost by unanimous decision.

An arrest warrant had been issued back in 2023, but he could not be detained earlier since he was residing in the United States. The investigation against Chavez is part of a broader case launched by Mexican prosecutors in 2019 against the Sinaloa cartel for organized crime, human trafficking, and the smuggling of weapons and drugs, based on a complaint filed by U.S. authorities.
