Congolese heavyweight Martin Bakole (21-1, 16 KOs) and his promoter Ben Shalom have confirmed that a blockbuster showdown with Anthony Joshua (28-4, 25 KOs) is being discussed for this summer in Africa.
According to Bakole, the bout is being organized with the involvement of Turki Alalshikh, the head of Saudi Arabia's General Entertainment Authority. The proposed venue is the iconic stadium in the Democratic Republic of Congo, where the legendary "Rumble in the Jungle" between Muhammad Ali and George Foreman took place in 1974.
“I think Joshua is coming back. A big fight in Africa awaits him. He should prepare, because my fight against him in Africa will be a real event.
Where exactly? I believe it will be in Congo. That’s where history was made. That’s where ‘The Rumble in the Jungle’ happened, and we need to fight in that same stadium.
Joshua himself has talked about it, and I’m sure it will happen.
Will it take place this summer? I believe so. His Excellency (Alalshikh) said he wants to see this fight in Africa. So, fingers crossed – I’m sure it will happen.”
Bakole’s promoter, Ben Shalom, head of Boxxer, confirmed that discussions have reached an advanced stage.
"It's decided, it's confirmed. I’ve heard the contract is signed. We are going to Congo!" – Shalom stated.
