Venezuelan boxer Jorge Linares (47-9, 29 KOs), a former world champion in three weight divisions, suffered his fourth consecutive loss on October 21. Linares faced British boxer Jack Catterall (28-1, 13 KOs) in Liverpool, UK, and was defeated by a unanimous decision.
Following this bout, the 38-year-old Linares announced his retirement:
"I am happy, very happy, I don't care that I lost. I am a three-time world champion. I am a very blessed man. To finish like this is amazing. I'm very happy to be here and to show who I am. I finished with a decision by the judges. That's important for me. I came here to enjoy. Yes, I pleased everyone. That's good. Yes, this is my last fight. I love boxing, I love being in the gym. I can help coach Ismael Salas in the gym. Maybe I can open my own gym. I have many opportunities. I can work on television and do whatever I want. I want to take a little rest. I made a beautiful story all my life, and that's why I am so happy. I don't need to prove to anyone who I am. That's why I trained so hard to make a good show. The only thing I want to say is thank you to everyone. Congratulations to Jack Catterall. The UK is the best," said Linares.
The Venezuelan boxer's last victory came in 2020, after which he suffered four consecutive losses. In 2018, Linares lost to Vasiliy Lomachenko by a 10th-round stoppage but remains the only fighter to have scored a knockdown against the Ukrainian boxer.
