John Fury on Whether Wardley Is Ready for Usyk

Oleksandr Usyk / Bradley Collyer, PA

John Fury, father of former heavyweight champion Tyson Fury, shared his view on whether interim WBO heavyweight titleholder Fabio Wardley is ready for a fight with undisputed champion Oleksandr Usyk.

If I was guiding Fabio — no, because there are levels in this sport and he’s not there yet. Usyk is a clever fighter with massive experience. We’re talking about a guy (Wardley) who didn’t have an amateur career. Eight fights in a semi-amateur format. You can’t just jump from that level straight to this one.

Don’t get me wrong — if he lands on Usyk, he’ll flip him upside down. But I’d give him four or five more wins, let him face good opponents, and only then let him go for it when he’s actually ready. You need the right moment with Usyk. Usyk isn’t eternal — he’s 38.

If they time it right, we could see Fabio Wardley from Ipswich become the heavyweight champion of the world — and it would be well deserved. He’s capable of it, just not now,” said John Fury to Boxing King Media.

On October 25, Fabio Wardley (20-0-1, 19 KO) stopped Joseph Parker via 11th-round TKO.

Oleksandr Usyk (24-0, 15 KO) last fought in July, when he knocked out Daniel Dubois in the fifth round in their rematch to reclaim the undisputed heavyweight championship.
