In a 10-round showdown, he faced former contender Jose Benavides Jr. (28-3-1, 19 KOs). Charlo's championship belt was not on the line, as their bout took place in the interim weight class – 73.9 kg. At the weigh-in, Jermell exceeded this limit, registering 75.4 kg.
