Promoter Eddie Hearn believes that Teofimo Lopez could have had two more fights after facing Josh Taylor if he had more moderate financial demands:
"Boxing needs people like Teofimo Lopez. But he is one of the guys with unrealistic financial expectations for his fights. I sympathize with Bob Arum and other guys because can you imagine their conversation? 'Okay, Teo. We want you to have a defense on December 9. I'll give you 2 or 2.5 million dollars for a voluntary defense against anyone you want. Arnold Barboza or anyone.'
And Teofimo responds: '2.5 million? You're joking. I want 10 million.' But on what basis?
You can't sell tickets at the Hula Hall in Madison Square Garden. This is not a paid broadcast on ESPN. All the numbers are mathematical and factual.
If the promotional company doesn't want to lose several million dollars because of this fight, it won't happen. It's great to say 'I deserve this,' but on what basis? Let the fighters focus on the show, let them handle their financial matters, and they will quickly understand what they are worth.
Teofimo is an amazing personality; he suits boxing well, but he will ruin his career. He will have zero activity. He could have had two more fights after Josh Taylor.
The same Deontay Wilder hasn't been in the ring for over a year. He could have boxed twice during this time, but he doesn't want to fight for 3-5 million dollars. AJ agreed to lower amounts to fight Franklin and Helenius, but you know what? He remained active. As a promoter, it disappoints me dealing with such people.
We don't mind overpaying fighters, but imagine if the figure is 2 million, and someone is asking for 10. Okay, if they ask for 2.5 or 3, because you can negotiate. But in the first case, it's like banging your head against a wall," Hearn said.
Teofimo Lopez announced the end of his career after defeating Josh Taylor. At the same time, negotiations are underway for Lopez's fight against Subriel Matias in the spring of 2024.
