Matchroom Boxing chief Eddie Hearn explained why, in his view, Devin Haney has lost his passion for the sport.
“Devin has changed. He fell out of love with boxing because of what happened in the fight with Ryan Garcia and all the nonsense around it.
I think the Ryan Garcia fight was tough. It wasn’t just about what happened to him — it was about people’s reaction. He became the villain in a fight where he was beaten by a guy who had performance-enhancing drugs in his system, which should never have been the case.
I think that made Devin fall out of love with boxing. And I believe right now Devin is largely fighting just for money — and that’s when it becomes dangerous, because you’re no longer the same fighter,” said Hearn.
In their clash, Haney (31-0, 15 KOs) and Garcia (24-2, 20 KOs), it was Ryan who came out victorious. Later, Garcia tested positive for the banned substance ostarine, and the result of the fight was overturned.
