Matchroom Boxing head Eddie Hearn didn’t hold back when asked about a potential clash between American welterweights Jaron “Boots” Ennis and Vergil Ortiz.
“Ortiz is easy to beat. Vergil’s a great fighter — I respect my friends at Golden Boy — but I’ve got to be honest: I think Ennis would toy with him.
He loves dragging opponents out of their game. Obviously, we’re still buzzing from his last performance, and we’re ready to challenge the entire world. I just think Jaron is a special kind of talent.
This fight would cement him as one of the pound-for-pound best, and he’ll only keep climbing. He’s 27 now, and I’ve been trying to sign him for five years.
His fight against Karen Chukhadzhian was solid, but I’ve always known just how unique Ennis is. He recently faced the best welterweight in the world, Eimantas Stanionis, and dismantled him — he just played with him,” Hearn said.
In his most recent outing, Jaron Ennis defeated Stanionis after the Lithuanian’s corner refused to let him continue beyond the sixth round.
