Matchroom Boxing head Eddie Hearn shared his thoughts on the state of American boxer Ryan Garcia (25-1, 20 KOs). The promoter expressed doubt that Garcia’s behavior is a public act and believes he needs help.
“It’s not my business, but someone needs to help him. Because you know, after the fight with Devin Haney, he told everyone it was an act. Can we all now admit that it wasn’t an act? Because he’s still acting the same way eight weeks later.
I hope someone who cares about him can give him a hug, get him off social media, send him on a break, and give him the help he needs. Because if you can’t see that his behavior is out of character, then you’re a f****** idiot.
Imagine if this was your son, brother, or friend – wouldn’t you say, ‘Come on, put that phone down, let’s go’? But no, people want to consume it, people want to make money off it, there are too many sycophants around him. In my opinion, the guy needs help,” Hearn said.
After winning the fight against Devin Haney, Ryan’s doping tests returned positive for Ostarine. Repeat tests also showed positive results. A further decision regarding Garcia’s career is pending. Haney’s team advocates for the opponent's disqualification and the annulment of the fight’s result.
Ryan commented on the scandal in his usual style: “If I took steroids, then I’m gay. The only steroids I’m on are Jesus steroids.”
Subsequently, Garcia was arrested on vandalism charges – he damaged property in a hotel room and corridor.
The boxer’s manager, Lupe Valencia, spoke about the difficult period in the fighter’s career:
“We are aware of the recent arrest. This comes at a very tough time for Ryan, as he is dealing with devastating news regarding his mother’s health.
First and foremost, we urge everyone to respect Ryan’s privacy during this difficult period. Ryan has openly spoken about his mental health struggles over the years, and he is now facing an enormous emotional burden. The support and understanding of fans and the public are crucial as he deals with these personal challenges,” Valencia said.
