Devin Haney (31-0, 15 KOs), the WBC Super Lightweight Champion, opened up on The MMA Hour about why his match against Ryan Garcia (24-1, 20 KOs) transcends the ring—it's a clash marred by personal grievances.
"He said something about my religion that was a turning point for me. He knows what he uttered. I prefer not to echo it. He's aware of his words and their intended direction at me. Now, it's become a personal battle," articulated Haney.
Responding to these accusations, Garcia, who joined the studio later, offered his perspective: "I managed to catch a bit of his commentary. Firstly, I want to make it clear—I've never disrespected his religion. That's something I'd never entertain. I'll tell you what I said. My words were 'Merry Christmas.' And he perceived that as a slight. Was I aware that Muslims don't celebrate Christmas? No, that slipped my mind. My photographer is a Muslim, and there's absolutely no disrespect between us. Devin, let's not drag religion into our rivalry. It baffles me why you'd do that," Garcia countered.
The eagerly awaited duel between Haney and Garcia for the WBC title is set for April 20 in New York.
