The founder and head of Golden Boy Promotions, Oscar De La Hoya, announced that they are withdrawing from the race to sign WBC lightweight champion (up to 61.2 kg) Shakur Stevenson (22-0, 10 KOs).
"Shakur Stevenson, you’re a free agent. You’re a great fighter, a big talent. But not for me. I can’t promote someone who says, ‘I don’t fight for the public,’" Oscar said.
Stevenson responded, claiming that he was the one who declined to collaborate with Golden Boy.
"He’s mad because he found out I’m not signing with him. It’s all good, Oscar De La Hoya, you’ll get over it... And I never knew there were cowards among Mexicans. Everyone I know has guts," Shakur wrote on Twitter.
As a reminder, Shakur became a free agent after his contract with Top Rank ended. Stevenson has offers from Floyd Mayweather’s Mayweather Promotions and Eddie Hearn’s Matchroom Boxing. The boxer has spoken positively about Hearn and was his guest during the fight between Jaron Ennis and David Avanesyan.
