Former world champion Ginjiro Shigeoka (11-2, 9 KOs) has undergone emergency brain surgery after losing consciousness in the ring following his defeat to Pedro Taduran (18-4-1, 13 KOs) in their IBF minimumweight title fight.
According to the Japan Boxing Commission (JBC), Shigeoka suffered an acute subdural hematoma and has already undergone craniotomy surgery.
He is currently being monitored at a private hospital in Osaka, Japan. The JBC has officially ruled that Shigeoka must retire from professional boxing.
As a reminder, on May 24, Pedro Taduran defeated Shigeoka via split decision in their rematch. Immediately after the fight, Shigeoka lost consciousness and was carried out of the ring on a stretcher before being rushed to the hospital.
