Gervonta’s Trainer: “Canelo is the King. I’d Love to See the Result of a Fight with Crawford”

American trainer Calvin Ford shared his thoughts on the potential bout between WBA super welterweight champion Terence Crawford (41-0, 31 KOs) and WBA, WBC, and WBO super middleweight champion Saúl Álvarez (62-2-2, 39 KOs).

Canelo is the king. Say what you want, but it’s a great fight. I’d love to see the result of that fight. I keep an eye on Canelo. He makes the right moves when it comes to choosing fights and so on. That’s why, again, he’s the king.

Has Crawford lost his power in the new division? That was his first fight. I can’t say he didn’t carry his power up with him. He had to make adjustments and all that. It was his first fight in that weight class.

It’s like with my guy, the ‘Monster’ David Benavidez, when he moved up to light heavyweight. It all depends on how you adapt. I hope Terence Crawford has another fight in that weight class to show the world that he’s ready. If not, then we’ll start asking questions,” Ford told Fighthype.

On September 14, Canelo won a unanimous decision against Edgar Berlanga (22-1, 17 KOs). In August, Terence Crawford moved up a division and defeated Israil Madrimov (10-1-1, 7 KOs) by unanimous decision, taking the WBA world title and interim WBO title at super welterweight.

Crawford’s next opponent will likely be WBC and WBO super welterweight champion Sebastian Fundora (21-1-1, 13 KOs). Crawford’s team has requested an additional 10 days from the World Boxing Organization (WBO) to reach a fight agreement. The organization granted the extension, providing time until October 10.
