WBA Strips Gervonta Davis of Full Champion Status: Boxer Declared Wanted

he World Boxing Association (WBA) has officially announced a change in the status of its lightweight champion, Gervonta Davis. Due to ongoing legal proceedings and a police arrest warrant, the boxer has been moved to the "champion in recess" category.

This decision means that the full WBA world lightweight title is now vacant. The organization is expected to decide shortly which contenders will compete for the belt. WBA President Gilberto Mendoza noted that Davis will have the opportunity to present his arguments and appeal this decision once his legal situation stabilizes.

The grounds for the association's sanctions stem from an alleged domestic violence case involving his former girlfriend, Courtney Rossel. The situation is further complicated by the fact that the boxer's current whereabouts are unknown.

Emmanuel Jeanty, a spokesperson for the Miami Gardens Police Department, confirmed that law enforcement has involved specialized units in the case:

“The Miami Gardens Police Department is actively working with the United States Marshals Fugitive Task Force to locate and apprehend Mr. Davis.”

As a reminder, the "champion in recess" status typically grants a boxer the right to challenge for the title immediately upon their return; however, in this instance, Gervonta Davis's future career depends entirely on the court's final ruling.
