Gervonta Davis Explains Taking a Knee Against Roach

On March 1 in New York, USA, WBA lightweight champion Gervonta Davis (30-0-1, 28 KOs) faced Lamont Roach (25-1-2, 10 KOs) in a title bout that ended in a draw—the first time in Davis' career that he didn't secure a victory.

In the ninth round, Davis unexpectedly took a knee—a move that typically results in a knockdown being counted. However, instead of starting the count, the referee allowed Davis to run to his corner, wipe his face, and continue fighting. After the bout, Davis revealed the bizarre reason behind his actions.

"I just got my hair done two days ago, and it must have gotten greasy or something. You know how it is—when you sweat, that stuff drips into your eyes and burns.

Damn, y’all are booing like I’m making this up, but this is real. Look at my hair—I just got it done. But hey, at least it looks cool.

I know how this goes. One moment they love you, the next they hate you. Then you come back, and they love you again. You know what I mean?" Davis said.

The fight was scored 115-113 for Davis and 114-114 twice.
