Garcia vs. Haney: Everything You Need to Know About the Fight

On April 20th in New York, USA, a championship showdown for the WBC super lightweight title (up to 63.5 kg) will take place between Devin Haney (31-0, 15 KOs) and Ryan Garcia (24-1, 20 KOs).

This fight marks the first title defense for Haney and Garcia's first title chance in this weight class.

Ryan Garcia

Age: 25

Country: USA

Record: 24 wins, 20 by knockout, 1 loss

Recent Fights:

Luke Campbell: Win by TKO in Round 7.

Emmanuel Tagoe: Win by unanimous decision in 12 rounds.

Javier Fortuna: Win by KO in Round 6.

Gervonta Davis: Loss by KO in Round 7.

Oscar Duarte: Win by KO in Round 8.

Until recently, Garcia was a lightweight. With a size advantage, Garcia made concessions before meeting Gervonta Davis: both fighters conducted two weigh-ins—one the day before the fight and one on the day of the fight—as well as rehydration tests.

Devin Haney

Age: 25

Country: USA

Record: 31 wins, 15 by knockout, no losses

Recent Fights:

Joseph Diaz: Win by unanimous decision in 12 rounds.

George Kambosos (twice): Both wins by unanimous decision in 12 rounds.

Vasiliy Lomachenko: Win by unanimous decision in 12 rounds.

Regis Prograis: Win by unanimous decision in 12 rounds.

Since 2019, Haney has exclusively fought in championship bouts. He initially won the "interim" WBC title against Zaur Abdullaev and was later promoted to the regular WBC champion. In 2022, he became the undisputed lightweight world champion after his first victory over George Kambosos.

What to Expect During the Fight:

Ryan has engaged so much in the promotion that some officials suggested a psychiatric evaluation. He spoke about global governments and Masons allegedly abducting him for sacrificial rituals. Nonetheless, it's clear Ryan has prepared well. He completed a full camp with coach Derrick James, who trained Errol Spence, and looks to be in top shape based on photos.

Garcia represents Haney's biggest challenge in the last three years. Only Jorge Linares, whom Devin fought in 2021, compares in size to Ryan, so the champion should not expect an easy fight.

However, Haney is the total favorite according to bookmakers and most boxers and experts. Devin has shown even more confident boxing in this new weight class, and if the size of his opponent isn't a surprise, he should clearly outbox his counterpart.

We previously discussed where and when to watch the fight.
