The World Boxing Association (WBA) has officially confirmed that the upcoming clash between Ryan Garcia and Rolando “Rolly” Romero, scheduled for May 2 in Times Square, New York City, will be a title fight.
At stake: the WBA Regular Welterweight Championship.
This development follows the WBA’s decision to elevate reigning champion Jaron “Boots” Ennis to the status of Super Champion, opening the door for Garcia and Romero to compete for the now-vacant regular title.
Ennis, who recently claimed victory over Eimantas Stanionis on April 12, is now obligated to defend his Super title against mandatory challenger Shakhram Giyasov of Uzbekistan.
According to WBA regulations, Ennis must face Giyasov within 120 days of his last win.
