Jorge Capetillo, the cutman for WBC heavyweight world champion Tyson Fury (34-0-1, 24 KOs), discussed the British fighter's progress healing from a cut that postponed the fight with Oleksandr Usyk (21-0, 14 KOs) and when Tyson could return to sparring.
"The fight is scheduled for May, so he should get back to sparring in 2-3 weeks. There's always a chance that the wound could reopen, but Tyson needs to do what he's good at from his range, not trying to knock him out with a single punch.
It takes about 90 days to heal, but since the injury occurred, 60 days or more have passed, so I'm confident that with the right treatment, he'll be ready by May 18. He'll be able to start with light sparring soon, nothing too hard, just maintaining the right distance. This is more important than power shots in terms of reach and timing. Tyson needs to heal the cut properly before the fight and spar with good protective gear.
He needs to start with nothing crazy, to make sure he doesn't take a heavy shot that could reopen the cut. I'm going to emphasize this; he needs the right range and timing, and if those are in place, then it's game over for Oleksandr Usyk, and Tyson will be on top," Capetillo told Betway.
The Fury vs. Usyk fight was moved from February 17th to May 18th due to the cut Fury sustained in sparring. In early May, it was revealed that the boxer who caused that cut will face an Olympic champion.
