WBC and WBO super welterweight champion (up to 69,9 kg) Sebastian Fundora (21-1-1, 13 KOs) responded to a fight challenge from junior welterweight (up to 63,5 kg) contender Ryan Garcia (25-1, 20 KOs).
"Ryan is not in my weight class. He's moving up from junior welterweight – it's like the Kell Brook versus Gennady Golovkin fight.
Of course, it's a different fight, but, you know, he competes two weight classes below. Let's see if he really moves up to super welterweight. If he doesn't, no big deal, it's all the same to me," said Fundora.
On March 30, Sebastian Fundora won by split decision against Tim Tszyu (24-1, 17 KOs).
On the night of April 21, Ryan Garcia won by majority decision against WBC junior welterweight champion Devin Haney (31-1, 15 KOs). Despite the loss, Devin remains the WBC champion, as Ryan did not make the weight limit and was not eligible for the title.
It was later revealed that Garcia had failed doping tests taken the day before his fight against Haney, but according to insider Dan Rafael, the presence of one of the prohibited substances in the fighter's sample was not confirmed. The samples will be retested on May 22.
