Former world champion, British boxer Carl Froch, has expressed his bewilderment and disdain regarding the scheduled fight between American YouTuber-turned-boxer Jake Paul (9-1, 6 KOs) and former world champion Mike Tyson (50-6, 44 KOs).
"What does this young, upstart get from fighting Mike Tyson? What exactly is Jake Paul trying to achieve by beating up a nearly 60-year-old man?
There's nothing to prove. Tyson is far from his prime. He's done. He's become domesticated. I mean, he probably peaked in the early '90s. It's been 30 years, and he's not a boxer anymore. He's mellowed out, finished with the game.
Maybe Jake Paul got some bad advice? I mean, whoever told Jake Paul that fighting Mike Tyson was a good idea — Jake Paul is fighting an old man, so if he wins – he's beaten an old man. People will say: 'What did you prove?' If he loses – he's lost to an old man.
People who don't understand boxing might be thrilled about it: 'It's still Iron Mike Tyson, the great villain,' and he still has a punch. The last thing to go from a professional fighter is your punching power. Your reflexes go, your physical condition goes, your resistance to punches goes. If that's gone, imagine Jake Paul knocking out Mike Tyson.
To me, that just sounds absolutely disgusting. You're hitting an old man. It's wrong from every angle," said Froch.
The Paul-Tyson fight is set to take place on July 20 at the AT&T Stadium in Arlington, Texas. The event will be streamed on Netflix.
