Tony Sims, former trainer of British heavyweight boxer Anthony Joshua (28-4, 25 KOs), discussed what the recent loss to IBF champion Daniel Dubois (22-2, 21 KOs) signifies for Joshua’s career, suggesting that it’s a sign of him aging.
Sims also noted that Joshua now has only two options left: to retire or face former champion Tyson Fury (34-2-1, 24 KOs) in the ring.
"He’s had a fantastic career, but everyone gets older. There are always young guys coming through, and Daniel Dubois was one of them. One day, Daniel will be as old as Joshua is now (Anthony is 35 years old—ed.), and someone else will come forward. That’s how boxing evolves.
Big champions get older, and the young ones come to replace them. That’s part of the repeating story. I think that’s exactly what happened. Joshua had a great career. What he’s done for our sport is incredible. He filled stadiums, big stadiums, packed out the O2 Arena. He put boxing on the map in Britain.
A career is short. One day, you’re the youngest guy in the gym, and then you’re the oldest. It happens very quickly. I think that’s what happened. Everyone moves on, and now it’s Dubois’ time. One day, it will be another young guy’s time. Maybe Moses Itauma. It’s just age, and it’s inevitable.
Joshua is a very, very wealthy man. Probably one of the richest in the country. He doesn’t need to fight, but if he does, he will consider a fight against Tyson Fury," said Tony Sims in an interview with SecondsOut.
On September 21, Daniel Dubois knocked out Anthony Joshua in the fifth round.
