British boxer and IBO middleweight champion Chris Eubank Jr. (34-3, 25 KOs) discussed a potential fight against WBA, WBC, and WBO super middleweight champion Saul Alvarez (62-2-2, 39 KOs).
"This fight could definitely happen within the next year. He doesn’t have many options for his next opponent—there are not many names that boxing fans want to see. After David Benavidez, there are no more fighters. Maybe Beterbiev and Bivol, but they’re not in his weight class, and he probably won’t move up to fight them.
A fight between me and Canelo would be a grand matchup. Two very different personalities, completely different backgrounds. It would be very intriguing. It would be a lot of fun," said Eubank Jr.
Ben Shalom, the CEO of Boxxer, representing Eubank, stated that they have already begun negotiations for a bout with Alvarez.
"For me, there are two fights: with Canelo and with Conor Benn. We’ve already started some discussions regarding the fight with Canelo. Last time, we were close to making this fight happen. I believe Canelo is interested in this matchup. Just imagine the press conference in the UK and the USA; it would be monumental.
I think Canelo needs partners for fights, but he also needs stars. I don’t think his recent opponents have been the greatest stars, and Chris Eubank Jr. is definitely a big star. If he ever fights in the UK, this would be the fight that would fill Wembley Stadium. It’s number one on my list," said the promoter.
On October 12, Eubank Jr. knocked out Kamila Sheremeta (25-3-2, 8 KOs) in the 7th round.
In September, Saul Alvarez won a unanimous decision against Edgar Berlanga (22-1, 17 KOs).
