Fight Background
Jaron Ennis is finally returning to the ring. 2023 was a busy year for him. In early 2023, he faced Ukrainian Karen Chukhadzhian, who posed a significant challenge, forcing Ennis to go the distance for the first time since 2016. After that, Ennis decisively defeated Roiman Villa.
Despite wanting more significant fights, Ennis had to settle for the IBF belt, which became vacant after Terence Crawford relinquished it to pursue a rematch against Errol Spence. That rematch fell through.
Ennis signed with Matchroom Boxing, and promoter Eddie Hearn was ecstatic. Hearn sees Ennis as one of the top fighters for the next few years, planning many exciting matchups together.
Initially, Ennis was supposed to fight Cody Crowley (22-0, 9 KOs). However, Crowley failed vision tests, leading to a change in opponents.
Now, Ennis will face Crawford's former opponent, David Avanesyan. In December 2022, Avanesyan faced Crawford for the WBO title. Despite a strong start, Crawford knocked him out in the sixth round.
Since then, Avanesyan has fought once, in December 2023, against Cameroon’s Ambomo, who has more losses than wins. Matchroom explained the choice of Avanesyan as Ennis’ opponent:
"This is a tough fight for Ennis, but we wanted a hard matchup.
Thanks to Avanesyan for agreeing. He brings value and is known for being tough and brave, never taking a step back.
In my opinion, Avanesyan is facing one of the strongest fighters in the sport," said Eddie Hearn.
