Dwight Muhammad Qawi Passes Away

Former two‑division world champion Dwight Muhammad Qawi has died at the age of 72. According to his sister, Wanda Marvie King, Qawi had suffered from dementia in recent years.

The American began his professional boxing career while in prison—he had been sentenced to five years for robbery. After his release he faced the threat of returning to jail, but ultimately received probation.

In 1981 Qawi captured the Light Heavyweight world title by defeating Matthew Saad Muhammad, and successfully defended it three times. He lost the belt in his fourth defense to Michael Spinks. Soon after, in 1985, Dwight Muhammad won another world championship at heavyweight, which—after a successful defense against Leon Spinks—he later lost in a bout with the legendary Evander Holyfield.

Qawi retired with a record of 41 wins (25 by KO), 11 losses, and 1 draw. He was inducted into the New Jersey Boxing Hall of Fame in 1997, and into the International Boxing Hall of Fame in 2004.

Ready to Fight extends sincere condolences to the family and friends of Dwight Muhammad Qawi.
