The WBC super lightweight "Champion in Recess" Devin Haney (31-0, 15 KOs) is planning a big return to the ring, reports Forbes.
According to sources, Haney is negotiating a bout with WBO super lightweight champion Teofimo Lopez (21-1, 13 KOs). While no details on the date, purses, or other aspects of the fight have been confirmed, if an agreement is reached, Haney and Lopez would headline a boxing event in 2025. This event will be broadcast on ESPN and promoted by Top Rank.
In April, Devin Haney lost to Ryan Garcia (24-1, 20 KOs) by judges' decision; however, that result was overturned after Garcia failed a doping test and was handed a one-year suspension. Shortly after, Haney decided to temporarily pause his career. The WBC stripped him of his title, assigning him the "Champion in Recess" status, which allows him to challenge the reigning champion immediately upon his return.
In June, Teofimo Lopez successfully defended his title against Steve Claggett (39-8-2, 27 KOs) by unanimous decision over 12 rounds.
