Oscar De La Hoya Opposes a Garcia–Romero Rematch

Golden Boy Promotions founder and CEO Oscar De La Hoya says he has no desire to stage a second meeting between his fighter Ryan Garcia and WBA super-lightweight champion Rolando Romero.

I want him to let the hand heal completely — he really does have an injury — and for the doctors to give him 100-percent clearance to return.

I don’t like the idea of a rematch with Romero. The first fight was dull, and when you’re a promoter putting together rematches, it has to be because people are clamoring for it.

The first fight wasn’t entertaining; it didn’t leave a big impression, so I believe there are better opponents for Ryan.

We can make big fights — against Teófimo Lopez, for example, or other well-known boxers,” De La Hoya said.

Earlier, Garcia publicly voiced his dissatisfaction with his working relationship with De La Hoya.

The first bout between Ryan Garcia (24-2, 20 KOs) and Rolando Romero (17-2, 13 KOs) took place on 2 May and ended with Romero winning a unanimous decision; Garcia was dropped in the second round.
