De La Hoya: “Devin Haney Is a Damaged Fighter”

Legendary fighter and Golden Boy Promotions founder Oscar De La Hoya has thrown serious shade at former undisputed champion Devin Haney (31-0, 15 KOs), ahead of Haney’s upcoming clash with José Ramírez (29-2, 18 KOs) on May 2 in New York’s Times Square.

De La Hoya believes Haney is no longer the fighter he once was — and says Ryan Garcia’s recent demolition job may have permanently altered the American star.

“I think Devin Haney is a damaged fighter, especially after what Ryan Garcia did to him,” De La Hoya stated.

“Yes, it can happen that quickly. I saw the look on Haney’s face... He looked lost.

Look, Ramírez still has power, footwork, and that signature left hook. He’s coming into the ring hungry, fired up. He senses his opportunity.”

The bout marks Haney’s debut at welterweight (66.7 kg / 147 lbs). Though he remains unbeaten on paper, his controversial loss to Garcia — with three knockdowns and a unanimous decision defeat — still looms large.

While Garcia later tested positive for ostarine, leading to a one-year suspension and the fight result being overturned, De La Hoya insists the psychological and physical impact on Haney can’t be undone.

Ramírez, a former unified champion at super lightweight, enters the fight with a point to prove — and now, with his promoter’s full confidence.

May 2 just got even more interesting.
