David Benavidez Considering Move Up to Face Zurdo

Jose Benavidez Sr., father and trainer of interim WBC light heavyweight champion David Benavidez (up to 79.4 kg), revealed that his son might move up to the cruiserweight division (up to 90.7 kg) to challenge WBA and WBO titleholder Gilberto “Zurdo” Ramirez (47-1, 30 KOs).

Yes, this is something we could do right away—it’s exactly what we’re aiming for. If, for some reason, the fight with the winner of Beterbiev vs. Bivol doesn’t happen, we will absolutely move up to cruiserweight to face Zurdo Ramirez. I hope it happens,” Benavidez Sr. told Fight Hub TV.

In June, David Benavidez stepped up to the light heavyweight division and defeated Oleksandr Gvozdyk (20-2, 16 KOs) via unanimous decision. His next fight is scheduled against David Morrell (11-0, 9 KOs) on February 1 in Las Vegas, USA.

On November 16, Gilberto Ramirez defeated Chris Billam-Smith (20-2, 13 KOs) via unanimous decision.
