American star David Benavidez has officially been elevated to WBC light heavyweight champion (79.4 kg / 175 lbs). Benavidez, previously the interim titleholder, was next in line to face former champion Dmitry Bivol—but the Russian opted out of the fight.
Bivol is instead setting his sights on a trilogy bout with unified light heavyweight champion Artur Beterbiev.
With the title now around his waist, Benavidez is expected to return to the ring soon. The most likely opponent for his first title defense? British former world champion Callum Smith.
