British light heavyweight Liam Cameron (23-6-1, 10 KOs) has revealed that promotional company Boxxer initially sent him a contract for a 12-round fight against Ben Whittaker (8-0-1, 5 KOs), which he signed — but Whittaker’s team is now trying to change the terms to a 10-round bout. Cameron has made it clear he won’t agree to the adjustment.
“There’s a mess with the contracts, and I’m not allowed to talk about it — so I’ll try here. We signed for a 12-round fight, and now they’re trying to force a 10-rounder, doing everything they can, but I’m not backing down. I’m fighting a 12-rounder.
I tried to mention it on Gloves Are Off, but they wouldn’t let me. My interview never aired on Sky Sports. That’s the issue. I signed for 12 rounds. When I signed it, I thought, ‘He barely survives five rounds — this is great.’ A few weeks later, they sent another contract — this time for 10 rounds. That shows their level of confidence.
I’d go 15 rounds if I had to… The fight was signed for 12 rounds. Somewhere along the way, there was a mistake. They thought they sent me a 10-round contract, but it’s 12,” said Cameron.
Liam Cameron and Ben Whittaker are set to meet in a rematch on April 20 at Resorts World Arena in Birmingham, UK.
Their first bout took place on October 12 last year and ended in controversy when both fighters fell out of the ring at the end of round five, resulting in Whittaker suffering an injury and the fight being declared a draw. Judges' scorecards: 58-58, 58-57 (Whittaker), 58-57 (Cameron).
