29-year-old British boxer Conor Benn has shared what he believes was the key factor behind his defeat in the first fight against IBO Middleweight champion Chris Eubank Jr.
“I knew I was hurting him because he looked vulnerable in the ring. It felt like he could go down from a single shot at any moment. But I never once thought during the fight: Did I win that round? How many rounds have I won? I was completely consumed by the violence.
I genuinely thought I could knock him out. I was so close, and I just got greedy in the ring. That comes down to a lack of discipline. I’m more disappointed about the lack of discipline than anything else.
When they announced that he’d won, he dropped to the floor — he was in shock. I thought I’d won the fight. It felt like I was controlling the tempo, landing the harder, more destructive and eye-catching shots. Rounds 11 and 12 should go to him, but in the moment I felt I was ahead.
But again, his work rate… he worked well. They weren’t destructive punches. They were chaotic, messy. He used his weight well, but I wouldn’t call it a robbery. It was too close a fight to clearly call a winner. But my lack of discipline gave the fight away,” Benn told Sky Sports.
The first fight between Conor Benn (23-1, 14 KOs) and Chris Eubank Jr. (35-3, 25 KOs) took place on April 26 and ended with Eubank winning by unanimous decision, three times by 116–112.
The rematch will be held on November 15 at the Tottenham Hotspur Stadium in London, United Kingdom.
