American boxer Jermell Charlo (35-2-1, 19 KOs) has officially been stripped of his World Boxing Association (WBA) title in the super welterweight division (up to 69.9 kg), reports Boxing Scene. WBA President Gilberto Mendoza informed journalist Dan Rafael about the Association's committee decision to relieve the 33-year-old Charlo of their belt. Consequently, the former undisputed champion has lost the last of his previously held titles.
Jermell won the WBA title in 2020 with an 8th-round knockout victory in a unification fight against Jeison Rosario. The following year, he fought to a draw against Brian Castano in a bout for the undisputed championship, and in 2022, he knocked out Brian in the 10th round to become the undisputed champion.
Ultimately, Charlo never defended the titles. After achieving undisputed status, he moved up two weight classes for a fight against Saul Alvarez and lost by a decision.
Now, the vacant WBA title will be contested in a fight scheduled for March 8 in Saudi Arabia. Competing for it will be Uzbek boxer Israil Madrimov (8-0-1, 6 KOs) and Russian Magomed Kurbanov (25-0, 13 KOs).
