The World Boxing Council (WBC) has unveiled a unique belt for the winner of the upcoming bout between Mexican champion Saul "Canelo" Alvarez (61-2-2, 39 KOs) and Puerto Rican contender Edgar Berlanga (22-0, 17 KOs).
The WBC Tamaulipas II belt is crafted in the traditional colors of the Mexican state of Tamaulipas, the birthplace of WBC President and Ready to Fight advisor Mauricio Sulaiman's parents.
"Since 2017, the WBC has launched this initiative to present commemorative belts on significant dates in professional boxing, and every year, a culture is chosen to create these belts as a tribute from Mexico to the world.
For over 35 years, these dates have showcased the best fights worldwide. These dates belonged to 'El Puas' Olivares, Julio Cesar Chavez, Salvador Sanchez, then to Oscar De La Hoya and Floyd Mayweather, and now Canelo has carried the torch for the past decade.
Tamaulipas is very special to me and my family. My parents are from Ciudad Victoria. Historically, this region holds great significance, even hosting a fight involving Jack Johnson. Great champions have come from this land. I am deeply grateful to Governor Américo Villarreal and his team for promoting the values and culture of Tamaulipas globally.
This belt will be awarded to the winner of the Canelo vs. Berlanga fight, which opens a new chapter in the greatest boxing rivalry between countries: Mexico vs. Puerto Rico," said Sulaiman.
Canelo previously received the first WBC Tamaulipas belt in May after defeating fellow Mexican Jaime Munguia (43-1, 34 KOs).
The bout between Saul "Canelo" Alvarez and Edgar Berlanga is scheduled for September 14 in Las Vegas, USA.
