Canelo Believes Gervonta Should Have Been Disqualified Against Roach

WBA, WBC, and WBO super middleweight champion Saul "Canelo" Alvarez (62-2-2, 39 KOs) shared his thoughts on the controversial fight between WBA lightweight champion Gervonta Davis (30-0-1, 28 KOs) and Lamont Roach (25-1-2, 10 KOs).

Canelo admitted that he agreed with the draw, but insisted that Davis should have been disqualified due to the controversial ninth-round sequence—when he took a knee and the referee failed to count it as a knockdown.

"Yes, I think it was a draw. But he took a knee.

And then his team stepped in and covered his face with a towel. That’s a disqualification. No question about it. It’s not my business, but I’m just talking about the rules."

For reference, on March 1, Davis and Roach fought to a majority draw. The fight’s most controversial moment came in round nine, when Davis take a knee, but the referee did not rule it a knockdown, sparking heated debate in the boxing community.
