Canelo on Benavidez: "The Same Old Story"

World absolute super middleweight champion Saúl Álvarez (60-2-2, 39 KOs) responded to criticism suggesting he is avoiding a matchup against WBC "interim" champion David Benavidez (28-0, 24 KOs). Canelo insists that such talk doesn't bother him.

"I'm not irritated by the criticism about not fighting Benavidez because throughout my career, there's always been someone else. When I fought one person, the talk started: 'Why don't you fight Golovkin?' They said I was avoiding him. The same was said about Cotto, then Lara, Austin Trout, and many others. So, it doesn't bother me because it’s the same old story repeating for years. At this stage of my career, I will do what is right for me, and that's all," said Canelo.

Canelo's next fight will be against fellow countryman Jaime Munguia (43-0, 34 KOs) on May 4th in Las Vegas, USA. David Benavidez is set to face Ukrainian Oleksandr Gvozdyk (20-1, 16 KOs) on June 15th in Las Vegas.
