Former world champion Chris Algieri believes the fight for the super middleweight absolute championship (up to 76.2 kg) between Jaime Munguia (43-0, 34 KOs) and Saul "Canelo" Alvarez (60-2-2, 39 KOs) will end in a knockout.
"Munguia is one of those guys who throws so many punches, leaving gaps in his defense, and the best version of Canelo will counter him, stop him, and do it quite easily," Algieri predicts.
"At thirty-three, most guys start to decline, and I'm talking about Canelo here. Munguia, on the other hand, is approaching his physical prime. It will be interesting to see how Canelo's power impacts Munguia early on because there will be holes in his defense. Remember Munguia's previous fights? How many times did you see him throw left hooks and then get hit? He'll do that with Canelo and suffer early in the fight. I think it's going to be an interesting battle.
At this stage in Canelo's career, his punch output is decreasing, making the fight intriguing. You have a young, energetic Munguia who is hungry and, essentially, his entire career has been built for this moment, and he has his chance against an aging Canelo. He's not the same guy he used to be. Does that make the fight better? I think so.
And I think it will be fun as long as it lasts. I believe we'll see a knockout in this fight, but while it lasts, I think it's going to be a lot of fun because Jaime Munguia is allergic to bad fights," Algieri said.
The fight is set to take place on May 4th in Las Vegas. It will be Alvarez's first fight against a Mexican opponent since 2017.
