Canelo vs. Crawford Fell Through: Hearn Explains Who's to Blame

Eddie Hearn, head of Matchroom Boxing, has explained the reasons behind the failed negotiations for the fight between former undisputed super middleweight champion Saúl "Canelo" Álvarez (61-2-2, 39 KOs) and WBA super welterweight champion and interim WBA super welterweight champion Terence Crawford (41-0, 31 KOs).

"Turki wanted to see the Canelo vs. Crawford fight and also Canelo vs. Benavidez. He contacted me the night after the first press conference for the Canelo vs. Berlanga fight in New York. Turki said, 'I want to organize the Álvarez vs. Crawford fight. Talk to Saúl, let’s make it happen.' I agreed.

I reached out to Saúl and informed him that Turki was keen to set up this fight and that Canelo should meet with him in Los Angeles since he was there. But Álvarez noted that he was focused on the Berlanga fight and didn’t want to discuss other bouts until that was over.

Canelo decided to hold off on the fight with Crawford until after the Berlanga bout, which caused the February fight with Crawford to fall through, as Turki wanted to organize it immediately," Hearn explained.

The fight between Saúl Álvarez and Edgar Berlanga (22-0, 17 KOs) is scheduled for September 14th in Las Vegas, USA.

On August 3rd, Terence Crawford won a unanimous decision against Israil Madrimov (10-1-1, 7 KOs).
