Former world champion Timothy Bradley (33-2-1, 13 KOs) believes that the fight between Saúl "Canelo" Álvarez and David Benavidez will not take place. He argues that such a bout is too big of a risk at this stage in the career of the Mexican undisputed champion.
"Canelo is trying to maximize his earnings. He's trying to exit the game at its peak, and that's exactly why he doesn't want to fight Benavidez.
In his eyes, the fight makes no sense because he believes he has already done enough in the sport, thinking this battle won't add anything to his legacy.
When a fighter like Canelo believes in this, and fans like us want to see him fight the best, but he's just holding those belts, it looks like disrespect in our eyes.
However, in his eyes, it appears as, 'I control the situation, I am the cash cow, and I can do whatever I want.' And all sanctioning bodies follow suit.
Berlanga represents a limited risk, a guy with limited abilities, limited skills, but who can punch and has a certain reputation in boxing. It's the perfect mix of risk and narrative that Canelo is looking for at this stage of his career," said Bradley.
Canelo's return date is now set for May 4th. However, an opponent has yet to be announced. Upon announcing the date, Saúl stated that his opponent would definitely not be a Mexican. Yet, now among the possible opponents mentioned are Puerto Rican Edgar Berlanga and Mexican Jaime Munguia.
